Belize Interior – How We spent Our Time Waiting for Parts

February 27th, 2013

The time is 11 am and we have finished our drop off in Spanish Lookout.  Jenny and Mike at GumboLimbo, our accomodations in Georgeville, (Cayo District of Belize) are expecting us early afternoon so we have a couple hours to spend exploring, eating at places recommended by locals…we tried a place in Spanish Lookout, that failed so we picked up fresh corn tortillas from the local factory (US 1.50 for a pound), combined with our left over fried chicken from Chinese dinner and ate al fresco in the parking lot of the farmers market in San Ignacio while people watching and deciding which vendors would supply us with fruit.

After lunch, we went back to take a drive around Spanish Lookout and see more of the Mennonite land.  While there, we found Western Dairy.  Much like the dairy shops of yore (think Bridgeman’s – for those from MN), they stocked fresh milk, cream, cheese, cottage cheese, and ICE CREAM!  With the ice cream came an offer of shakes.  We enjoyed creamy, rich chocolate shakes and even got brain freeze.

Farmers Trading Post – the mac daddy of hardware stores included groceries, household goods, fabric & sewing supplies and farm equipment.  Pete eyed a machete and decided he would think about procuring the next day if he still wanted it, our current machete had been used for many a fish and the blade was worse for the wear.

Following our exploration, at 1:30 pm, along a little dirt road (the map claimed it was paved), we arrived at GumboLimbo, a beautiful resort tucked into the hills with sweet breezes, our oasis in Georgeville.

Mike and Jenny met us at the car, welcomed us, asked about Spanish Lookout (Mike introduced us via phone to Peter Janzen), and showed us to our building (#2) inviting us to join them for a drink and a swim after a rest. Our room was huge with an on-suite bathroom with water from their catchment system, so not good for drinking, but great for showers.

The afternoon included a swim in the infinity pool, cocktail hour with the other guests, delicious dinner and an incredible night of sleep in 70-degree weather and NO bugs.
